KU Changes at Amazon

Most of you would be aware of Amazon’s borrowing system. It isn’t available in Australia yet, but we are certain it will be soon. Customers join up to Amazon’s Prime program for around $15 a month and then they can borrow any book they want. Authors have been paid $1.35 for each borrow, which is a great deal, especially if your books are priced at 99 cents. KU (Kindle Unlimited) borrows have accounted for half of our monthly income.

Amazon has changed the system from July 1 2015. Now they will pay authors on the number of pages read. We are expecting our income to fall as our books are shorter than most adult novels. Hopefully not too much!

With the new change we have decided to sell our series books in bulk sets as well as single books.

Authors don’t receive their payments for 3 months after each month’s payment, so it will be very interesting to see if the new system makes a change to our income.

Amazon All Star Awards

Katrina Kahler has received 5 of these awards from Amazon since they were introduced 7 months ago for having a book in the Top 100 sellers on amazon.co.uk.

Katrina wrote this series of books about 2 years ago. They sat there making very few sales for a year. We kept changing the cover, revised the title and description, a little bit of FB marketing and whamo! it took off. This series of books is making a lot of money each and every month.

So the moral of the story is…DON’T GIVE UP! If it isn’t working, make some changes.

Colouring Books for Adults

Can you believe that the latest “big” trend on Amazon is the sale of Adult Colouring Books? Any of you who are graphic artists or enjoy playing around with graphics and photoshop may want to investigate. Apparently they are wonderful for stress relief. You would have to publish them through Createspace as paperbacks.

Am I Good Enough?

Can you relate to this question? I ask myself this almost daily. That nagging little voice in the back of my head won’t shut-up! “You’re not an author…what makes you think that people will want to read your stories…this chapter is pathetic…it’s not good enough…should I rewrite it?” Ever hear those voices?

Some observations about indie authors who are selling books and replacing their jobs. [Read more…]

Marketing Your Ebook

We’ve had a few people ask us about marketing over the past couple of weeks. Amazon K Boards is an excellent place for inspiration. Check out his link for some ideas:

Cheap Professional Photos

We’ve spent hundreds of dollars buying photos for our books, both for covers and internally. Today I found out about a site called Dollar Photo Club and every photo on the site is just $1! That is incredible value! If you buy a photo or graphic on most of the other sites, unless you purchase a subscription, you’ll pay between $8 and $20 for one photo. Initially I thought…I bet they have pathetic photos…and I was wrong. The photos are great. Check it out.

Self Publishing – Editing Hints

Self published authors are often short on cash when they start out and hiring an editor is very expensive. I have a friend who hired an editor a couple of years ago and it cost her $300 per chapter. So if you can’t afford an editor then we suggest that you ask a friend or relative (who has good literacy skills) to proofread your book for you. They may also point out any story lines or concepts that are not clear to them. [Read more…]
